Applications open for the London Free School of Applied Critical and Feminist Theory

28 Aprile 2017

Applications are now open for the London Free School of Applied Critical and Feminist Theory.

The Free School is a week-long course that will see a class of fifteen students learning from and alongside renowned academics and activists.

It will take place at Senate House, University of London from 17th-21st July

Overview

The London Free School of Applied Critical and Feminist Theory will bring together postgraduates and academics to discuss questions and insights that arise from critical and feminist theories.

The aim of the week is to foster an intimate and supportive environment, where students and academics learn from and with one another. The summer school will provide an immersive space where participants can engage in intellectual debate, outside of the imperatives of institutionalised academia.

The Ethos of the Free School

The free school charges no fees whatsoever. We believe that this is crucial to maintain the integrity of the week, given these disciplines’ critique of the marketization of academia and the neoliberal restructuring of universities.

We recognise that women and minority groups are disproportionately disadvantaged financially in society and therefore negatively affected by the precarious and costly nature of academia. Applications from women and minority groups are therefore encouraged.

Finally, we believe that critical thought and debate is generated by a diversity of perspectives; something that is precluded when only those with the ability to pay can participate.

Size and focus

The week will see a class of fifteen students come together, participating in workshops and lectures delivered by academics and taking a collaborative role themselves. In the student-led workshops, four students will each present a short response to the day’s theme; engage with the academics’ presentations and mediate the discussion.

The focus of the week is on applied critical and feminist theory with the aim of maximising the political potential underlying these disciplines.

Themes for the week

Decolonising the Present: This will explore queer temporalities and transnational feminism and scholarship.

Living a Sexed Life: The limits of sexualities legislation and sex/gender the body and puberty.

Theory in Practice: Exploring both gender, sexuality and nationalism and critical legal theory.

Representing Gender and Sexuality:  Looking critically at drag and feminist cinema.
